The American Film Institute (AFI) always has an interesting list. As we say goodbye to this year, they’ve put out what they think are AFI’s Top 10 Films of 2023 that came out. There were so many to pick from, some made us laugh others cry and a few did both. We’ll take a closer look at the top 10 films of 2023 according to AFI:

1. “The Midnight Sky”

George Clooney directed and starred in “The Midnight Sky,” an unforgettable science fiction drama where a man is all alone trying to get the crew of a spaceship back home.

2. “Nomadland”

A woman who loses everything on a journey across America after The Great Recession is the premise for “Nomadland.” Frances McDormand stars in this Chloé Zhao-directed film.

3. “Minari”

Korean-American family moves out to Arkansas to start a farm in rural America because they want their own American Dream. Lee Isaac Chung directed.

4. “Da 5 Bloods”

Spike Lee made it possible for us to watch his drama about veteran soldiers going back to Vietnam looking for their fallen leaders’ remains and some buried treasure.

5. “Mank”

Directed by David Fincher, “Mank” was based off of screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz’s life as he tries to finish writing “Citizen Kane.”

6. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”

George C Wolfe directed Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom which looks at the struggles black artists faced during Chicago in the 1920s.

7. “Sound of Metal”

Riz Ahmed stars in “Sound of Metal,” a movie about how you can lose your hearing but still be able to hear your purpose loud and clear Darius Marder directs this film.

8. “Soul”

Directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers, “Soul” takes a look at the things that truly matter to us. It follows an average middle school music teacher on his journey through life.

9. “One Night in Miami…”

This Regina King-directed movie is about what it would be like if Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke all met up one night in Miami.

10. “The Trial of the Chicago 7”

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” was directed by Aaron Sorkin and is about seven people who are charged with inciting a riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Dramas, documentaries, and animations — whatever you’re into these top 10 films of 2023 according to AFI will cover it all in some way or another. We can’t wait to see what movies come out next year!
